Fuerteventura – The Perfect European Surf Destination?

January 11th, 2011 by

With budget flights to Fuerteventura increasingly available, the small resort town of Corralejo has been earning its reputation as something of a surfing Mecca. Located 40 minutes to the north of Fuerteventura Airport, this small fishing harbour is readily accessible and yet, retains a chilled atmosphere that appeals to surfers.

Because of its location, close to the equator, Fuerteventura attracts a steady stream of visitors throughout the year. The island basks in an endless summer with temperatures that fluctuate from 20°C in January to highs of 28°C in August. This steady climate warms the seas around Fuerteventura, keeping the water temperature at 17-24°C and thereby providing perfect conditions for water sports enthusiasts.

Corralejo has been gaining popularity amongst surfers because of its position at the very northernmost tip of Fuerteventura. Its beaches produce consistently ridable waves, thanks to a weather system that generates northerly swell all year round.

Why is Fuerteventura Great for Surfing?

During the daylight hours, Corralejo’s main attractions are its beaches and water sports, but as evening approaches the town itself comes to life. The old town surrounds a quaint fishing harbour, and its waterfront promenade offers a wonderful selection of restaurants, cafes and bars that will entertain guests late into the night.

For those who fancy a break from the surf, at the harbour side you can charter a boat to the neighbouring island of Los Lobos or a ferry to nearby Lanzarote. Alternatively, head out of town and you’ll soon come across the awe inspiring Corralejo Sand Dunes; now officially recognised as a national park.

Heading out on Surfari

With the rise in demand for water sports excursions, Fuerteventura’s surfing companies are now offering their customers specialist ‘Surfari’s’. These dedicated surfing trips are tailored for groups, scowering the coast to track down the very best of the surf. Most of the big surf companies operate from Corralejo and provide dedicated accommodation for their guests. You’ll just need to arrange that budget flight and take along your spending money.

Where is the Best Surf in Fuerteventura?

Winter Surf – November to April

November brings the start of the winter surfing season. A swell arrives from the Atlantic Ocean and waves appear on the northern and western coastlines. Conditions here suit advanced surfers, limited only by their choice of swell height and wind direction.

While the advanced surfers head west, beginners and intermediates should be able to find a wave on the beaches around Corralejo or by heading east if conditions are a little too big.

Summer Surf – April to November

As the African mainland is subjected to the heat of the summer sun, north easterly winds blow steadily across the Canary Islands and generate swells along the north and east coasts of Fuerteventura.

Summer brings warmer waters and better weather, but waves are less consistent than in the winter months. This is the perfect time for lessons with a professional surf instructor who can get you standing up on that board and developing your surfing technique.

With beginners sticking to the north of the island, experienced surfers will want to check out conditions along the east coast where larger waves can be found.

I live on the Canary Island of Tenerife, and we have surf here too – just sayin’ :=)

    • Hi IslandMomma,

Your dead right of course. I have a relative who has recently moved out to Tenerife, unfortunately she doesn’t surf, but it’s great as somewhere for me to crash when I surf there. The Canaries all seem receive great swell, and I’d be very happy to spend some time surfing around them all. In fact I’m getting a hankering to head off there right now lol :-)

  4. I actually worked in Corralejo in the days before I settled down. never tried the surfing as that was not my scene however I remember the people to be friendly and very nice.

    • Hi Natalie,
I bet it was a wonderful place to work. You should definitely give the surfing a chance next time you get the opportunity. It’s surprisingly addictive!
